100 word assignment – WEEK 23

GO TEST YOUR SHERRY !

Go test your sherry, lentilman,
Her meals in disarray,
Just fourteen crisps to savour,
Forlorn, you start to pray!
Too brave, you fall from Matron’s tower
When you should have said ‘I’ll pay!’
O hidings from one you oughtn’t annoy, oughtn’t annoy.
O tidings of comfort and joy!

Bow, applaud and fling her praises;
All rue within their place,
The velvet glove of motherhood
When slapped upside their face.
Its a lowly ride this Christmas
If Delia thou disgrace.
O hidings from one you oughtn’t annoy, oughtn’t annoy.
O tidings of comfort and joy!

    • First thoughts were that its her hubby in the first verse whose cocked it up and then had to seek forgiveness in the second. Or that she’s cocking it up and he’s keeping a low profile, then the seconds a warning to those who think they can do better. Hopefully multiple interpretations.

  1. This is such a well rounded piece – got both sides of the marriage & kitchen! πŸ˜‰
Really impressed that you chose such a difficult carol – it has a very quick, staccato rhythm.
Thank you so much for taking up this very silly festive challenge A!

  2. Hee hee! Loved it when it got delivered to my inbox all those days ago. Love it just as much second time round! Last two lines of each verse really made me laugh – and I’ve needed something to make me laugh this week.
