100 word assignment – WEEK 36

What’s in a name?

“Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late!”

“but what was the rabbit late for?” wondered Alice. She illicitly read a little further.

” …but when the Rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat- pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Edith started to her feet ….”

Alice frowned and discarded the rough manuscript. Late rabbits scampered from her thoughts. Uncle Charles, it appeared, had already chosen his favourite to star in his marvelous new novel. Well, she wouldn’t be ignored. If her sister could flirt, so could she. After all, there was that rowing trip planned for tomorrow…. She grinned slyly, suddenly thoughtful, and quietly left the study.

    • That was quick, Anna – I only just posted this! My attempt at cheek – makes a change from Sci Fi and Fantasy 😉 Glad it entertained. I did change a couple of words post comment but I think it reads better.

      • Only just remembered Julia’s stipulation about the last 10 words after reading your entry, so changed the sentences around. Think someone could come up with a better piece next week using the words as they stand now. Bit more depth and intrigue to it than going on a rowing trip!

    • Like to explore tangential possibilities, Irene. I was brought up on Twilight Zone and Outer Limits. Fantastic series, sadly missed. Things should never be truly as they seem, like in your take ;D I do enjoy a bit of darkness in these pieces as well.

      • Honestly, I do not remember watching both series. I love it when things aren’t what they seem to be. Roald Dahl’s Tales of the Unexpected is my favourite short story collection of all time.:-)
I am thinking of continuing the story in Madison’s Friday Fictioneers photo prompt challenge.

  1. I just happened to be online as you had posted it 🙂 Like the way you changed it and think that it has certainly opened up a lot more possibilities. How am I going to choose which to do? Maybe I will follow Lisa’s lead and try them all if I have time, or it will be closed eyes and picking at random….

  2. Definitely a new look at things. I can’t even imagine how it would have been if titled Edith’s Adventures in Wonderland. Looks like little Alice got her way after all. 😉

    • Doesn’t have that ring, does it? She knew that too … although whose to say Dodgson didn’t have Edith in mind (even though Alice was paid penservice in the novel) and he convinced her to accept her younger sister as the heroine in name only while her character reflected Edith’s? A possibility …

  3. Maybe Alice isn’t as silly and frivolous as the book wold have you believe! Good ending for someone to pick up on next week. Hoping to have time to join in again next week.

  4. a glimmer of life…truly a story to be followed through! and if she flirted well, perhaps she added to the silliness of the story as the beguiling took place… What a fun spin!

  5. I can hear the ‘thriller, there’s a dastardly act about to happen’ music playing! love this and can not even begin to think where it will be taken next week!
